Bio

Power Of Thought (POT) is a musician, activist and wordsmith based in South Africa. He is the founder of Articulate Artists and a pioneer of South African hiphop culture, with over 2 decades of industry experience.

He is best known for his deep tone, complex rhyme schemes and controversial, but relevant content. He is also respected as a fierce battle rapper with a knack for comedic punchlines and clever wordplay.

POT started his music career by going to cyphers, battling on the streets and freestyling for fun as a teenager, but his roots go as far back as being in a band in highschool and finding his love of hiphop through friends who introduced him to the likes of Immortal Technique and other underground boombap artists, which greatly influenced his style.

He has proven to be an artist with universal appeal, capable of rocking any crowd regardless of genre or demographic. He has performed on countless stages across the globe, from Splash Jam, Science Frikshun, AFMP Sundays and 1808, to Back To The City, Oppikopi, Smoking Dragon, Forr Fest (Mozambique), New Art Fest (Greece), Underground United (Greece), OT301 (Amsterdam), De Sociale Diest (Eindhoven), Critical Winter, The Boombox, 420 D-Day, Bongalong Cape Town Cannabis March, Jozifest and Nirox Words Festival.

Power Of Thought has shared stages with the likes of Mac Lethal (USA), Copywrite (USA), Sage Francis (USA), Devin The Dude (USA), Eligh and Scarub (USA), eMC (Masta Ace, Punchline, Wordsworth & Stricklin), Euthimis (Greece), Thitis (Greece), The Beatceps (Germany), Proverb, HHP, Jack Parow, Die Antwoord, Ben Sharpa, Yugen Blakrok, Reason, AKA and Driemanskap.

He also had the honour of sharing the stage with Hip Hop legend, RA the Rugged man in Amsterdam, and was featured on Red Light Radio.

He is a Hip Hop purist, having worked with Tha Cutt and DJ Niffty (South African DMC champions), as well as other highly skilled turntablists, emcees and producers, like Sizzor Hands, Dj Malefactor, Polite, Rizzlah, Sta B, Joint Pusher, Echs Incognito (Australia), D-Cypha (Australia), EMPNE (Greece), Dj Erpeto (Greece), Livas (Greece) and Mr. Boomkat (Australia) and many others.

Over the years, POT has successfully dropped 3 projects, with many more in the pipeline. These include:

  • The WorkHorse Programme (2010) – received a 4/5 star rating in HYPE magazine
  • Dope Joints For POT Heads (2012) – received a 9/10 rating from headpage.co.za
  • The Boom Bap Bandit (2014) – featuring award winning rapper Diabolic (WarHorse Records, New York), Kriss AntiB, Selema Writes/Dice Mak/Slege Lee (EOW World Champ 2014) and fellow Articulate Artists member, SafarI

In 2019, Power Of Thought embarked on an extremely successful 3-date tour in Greece following the release of his single, “Rat Racism” (featuring Miz Ricks), which was playlisted by various South African radio stations and covered by international music blogs.

With no shortage of controversy in our society, Power Of Thought can always be counted on to deliver a balance of humour and thought-provoking social commentary, while making your head bop to his rhythmic flow and sharp figures of speech.
